Hi. I'm Judy Roland, and I'm a Director of Heritage Hall, based in Wales. I've been reading your (very good!) website, and wondered if your members/readers might be interested in knowing about us. (I have family in Florida, and they are telling everyone, but it's possible they've missed talking to a few people!)

We are trying to rescue an endangered species - antique illustrated books. They are being destroyed in their thousands every year by "breakers" who strip out good illustrations to frame and sell; then they throw away any damaged illustrations and the book's text - which is often an important historical document in its own right.

Although we know we can't stop this appalling waste, we are doing our bit. We buy both isolated, damaged illustrations, engravings, etc, and what remains of the books - often sans covers, bindings, and so on. Using the latest digital technology, we "mend" the tears, remove the stains, the yellowing and fading, and, using a variety of antique sources, we carefully restore the original colours and details to these small works of art.

We also carry out very careful research into the history, artists and significance of the original publications, and create documentation about them. It can take weeks to restore and research a single item.

EVERY original engraving, lithograph, aquatint or book we save is carefully preserved for posterity. But stabilising damaged paper and physically restoring books costs money. So...

..to make the whole Heritage Hall operation self-supporting, we make fine art quality limited edition prints of the restored and remastered illustrations. We use long-lasting archival inks, and do 7-colour printing (even in black and white, there are seven shades) to give tremendous subtlety and richness of tone. All prints are done on heavy, hand-finished watercolour paper (330 gsm weight). Each print is made individually to order. We enclose the insert about the work's provenance and creators, because when someone buys one of our prints, we feel they also need to understand and enjoy the great stories behind them.

Our emphasis is on British artists and works, but our seasonal collections also include some rare and lovely images from 18th and 19th century artists who worked in America, Canada, Australia, South Africa - wherever British culture and the Industrial Revolution made an impact.

Great play is made of saving major oil paintings and sculptures by "old masters". That's fine. But what about the small treasures we take for granted? Among our "finds", most of which have been discovered damaged - and even discarded, are old botanicals by Sir Joseph Paxton, designer of the Crystal Palace, landscapes by the great 18th century caricaturist, Thomas Rowlandson, and fine mezzotint portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds.

What we would like to say to all your members is that, before they buy an antique "original", please think twice. If you encourage the practice of "breaking" or stripping antique books, the next generation will know them only through a few precious examples in museums. Help us to save old books, and, in the process, discover rare and highly decorative images that you and your family will really love.

Ken originally hails from Manchester, England.
